Hi I know this question has been asked before But can't recall the advise that was given. So here it is: I have a 1985 M15 for about 3 years and I just started noticing that the main hangs down about 4 inches at the back. Is this normal or are my 29 year old sails done for and I need new sails? Also where can I find out the sail dimensions for my 1985 M15 is there a web page somewhere ?? Thanks Klaas
Yup. You need new sails. And sails for the M15 are quite reasonably priced. I got mine from JudyB at Hyde. She did a fantastic job. Measurements are key, as all these older M boats can have some slight differences. New sails change the boat so much you won’t believe it. Which reminds me, Judy, I owe you some money and some sails! Daniel, As long as you are considering new sails, look into having the main made as a loose footed one. The tack and clew will have to be reinforced more than the usual and you will need to install a bit better mechanical advantage on the outhaul fittings as you will be using it to trim the draft on the main but the boost in performance is said to be considerable. I am looking at new sails for the M17 I have and am seriously considering going the loose footed route. Please reply to this email as I have concerns that my missives to this website are not getting through to anybody. I have the new sails. They are loose footed, and that is the way to go. Much more control of the trim, and just looks pretty too. The Hyde sails are really well made, and have fittings on them that would work for a larger boat. Truly well done. I also have draft stripes on them to help me visualize shape. My message was a bit confusing because what happened when I ordered my sails is that the main fit perfectly, but the jib was too big. We just messed up on the detail needed for the measurements. JudyB was terrific, and remade the jib for me. I also got a 90 and a 128 percent jib. I still have to send her back the ones that don’t fit, and I got an extra sail so I want to pay her for that. Daniel, I echo Tom's endorsement of a loose-footed main. I ordered a new main for my M-17 in 2010 from Elliot/Pattison Sails. I failed to realize that I was ordering a loose-footed main until it arrived. Having sailed a Laser for several years, I decided it was OK. I reconfigured the outhaul (see attachment) to make it easy to adjust under way. I really like the ability to adjust the draft. It was a happy accident. Rich, In running your outhaul to to the mast on the boom, I noticed that you attached the outhaul line to a block halfway down the boom and used another line to adjust the outhaul. Why? For the purchase or are there other reasons that you've found through actual use? I've got a new-to-me refurbished loosefooted main and a new-to-me Monty OEM boom that I'm outfitting and hope to get out sailing this summer! (Both the sail and boom were collected on this very site! Thanks!) My old sail was not loose footed, so I hadn't fully considered the sail adjustments possible with a good outhaul (though I've seen your picture before and saved it for reference!). Now I'm getting excited about another sheet in the cockpit... On Sun, Jun 15, 2014 at 12:18 PM, Rich Makela <richmak@makelaperformance.com

I don't recall my thoughts at the time, other than it just seemed like a good way to get adequate purchase. I don't recall having a good example to follow. I am happy with the results, although I have replaced the plastic clam cleat shown in the photo with an aluminum one that holds better. I received a Delivery Status Notification for the message I sent just after noon today. The Delivery Status Notification arrived a few minutes after my message showed up on the forum. The message comes from system-user@mms.mycricket.com . I had the same thing happen on June 4. I've never seen this kind of thing before. A Google search revealed that mms.mycrickiet.com may not even be a legitimate URL. As long as you are considering new sails, look into having the
main made as a loose footed one. The tack and clew will have to
be reinforced more than the usual and you will need to install
a bit better mechanical advantage on the outhaul fittings as
you will be using it to trim the draft on the main but the
boost in performance
is
said to be considerable. I am looking at new sails for the M17
I
have
and am seriously considering going the loose footed route.
Please reply to this email as I have concerns that my missives
to
this
website are not getting through to anybody.
Thanks,

All the 15's that I made had the same rig. i can't speak for more recent production. I've heard that masts are longer now, but I haven't measured one. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daniel Rich" <danielgrich@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, June 15, 2014 9:29 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Do I need new sails Yup.

I had been noticing some bagging and wear and tear in the sails on my 1985 M-15 so I sent the sails to Sailcare for reconditioning and cleaning, they came back looking like new several weeks later and cost about $ 280. The advantage of getting the original sails reconditioned was retaining the original colors and numbers. If you decide you want new sails, pick up a copy of "Small Craft Advisor" and browse the ads at the back of the magazine. Read Jerry's column too. Where is your M-15 located, what is the number?
