I purchased a loose-footed main for my M-17 in late 2010. I also reconfigured the outhaul to enable easy adjustment while under way, especially upwind. I use a plastic clam cleat mounted on the boom to secure the outhaul. The clam cleat doesn't always hold, and I'm looking for a better solution. Has anybody used a cam cleat with a fairlead on an M-17 outhaul? Given the curvature of the boom, how can it be mounted on the boom? Rich Makela M-17 #233 - Harmony
Rich: the plastic ones strip out easily. use the aluminum CL211Racing Junior Mk1. this is the one i use(d) on my M15, M17 and on the Sage 17s to control the outhaul. works fine with a 3/16" or 1/4" line (also used for the reefing lines). :: Dave Scobie ________________________________ From: Rich Makela <richmak@makelaperformance.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2013 5:04 PM I purchased a loose-footed main for my M-17 in late 2010. Hi Rich, I reconfigured my outhaul last year to make it easy to adjust under way. I used a 4:1 arrangement, which reduces the strain on the cleat. A small clam cleat on the boom is all that is needed to make it fast, and that's easy to mount on the boom. it's pretty simple, but hard to describe. I'll post a picture in a couple of days. Rick, Have been away, sailing. Are you able to post a pic of your 4:1 out haul? Would appreciate seeing it. Thank you. Bill Wickett Makin' Time M17 #622 On 2013-08-13, at 7:46 PM, Rick Davies <jdavies104@gmail.com> wrote:

Here's a photo page I created for another sailing friend. The plastic clam cleat has now been replaced with an aluminum one, which seems to hold much better. Glad to, Bill. It'll be a few days until I'll be at the marina again. It's a little different than Rich's (not so neat, for one thing). Rick M17 #633 Lynne L On Tuesday, August 27, 2013, Bill Wickett wrote:

Hi Bill Here are a couple of pictures of my outhaul. To take the sail off, I just have to untie the lanyard from the eyestrap at the end of the boom and unreave it from the sheave on the sail. Everything stays on the boom. The clam cleat is aluminum. Rick M17 #633 Lynne L` On Tue, Aug 27, 2013 at 11:05 AM, Bill Wickett <billwick@gmail.com> wrote:

Try an aluminum clam cleat- they work pretty well and will fit the same footprint as the plastic one.. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rich Makela" <richmak@makelaperformance.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2013 4:04 PM Subject: M_Boats: M-17 Outhaul Cleat
