The deckmold was changed in the very early 80s (81?). Thereafter, the transom was solid and a motor mount was the method of attachment. Why not take the motor to a professional mechanic? When my 4hp Yamaha is working, it seems more power than you would ever need. And speaking of when it is working, I am wondering if anyone has had the same symptoms as I have had with my motor. I am in the middle of trying to get it to run properly. It is a 2002 Yamaha four HP four stroke. It had not been used for a coupla years prior to our buying it about three weeks ago. At first I thought it was just tune up related. Changed the plug, no help. Then I did a carb kit and cleaned everything all up. No help either. Then yesterday when my son and I were having a good look at everything we discovered the engine is burning oil. In fact, a couple of times when the outboard was kept in the back of the van it leaked oil as well...externally. Any help would be appreciated. I called everyone in the area and they are booked solid. Height of the season around here is the problem. Great idea though. I do a mechanic buddy to turn to....but I love to mess with these things myself now and again. For now I am using my old Johnson 2 stroke. If the Yamaha, once corrected is not much smoother or better than it has been, I may end up using Mr. Johnson permanently. I just got back for sailing and the 2 stroke twin is sooooo smooth and quiet. Short shaft though. Tim D.

Based on the way my Honda 2HP behaves, I'd still guess at a gooped-up carb. I needed to have mine professionally cleaned (still don't know what I was doing wrong). The oil lives in the crankcase and can leak out -- my Honda can only be stored in certain configurations, and if you leave it on the wrong side or end then the oil falls out. Giles Morris
The carb is very simple on these rascals. The jet is clean and all seems fine. The leaking oil is almost certainly the problem. It seems I have not paid as much attention to the transport and/or storage of this motor as I should have. I have tried to keep the motor on its arm side....but my son has also put the motor away a couple of times and may have had it on the other side for quite a while before I noticed the warning sticker on the motor. Either way, I have obviously done this wrong and gotten the oil leakage problem. First four stroke I have owned. Having oil in the combustion chamber is not a good thing. You should have seen the amount of oil in the water when we fired it up in a barrel. Yikes.
Now I am wondering what it is going to take to correct the problem. Onward and upward. Thanks for all the help folks. Much appreciated. Tim D. Kelowna BC 1983 M17 #369 Puff.
