A question for those who know the history & reasoning... At some point the traveler on the M17 was moved from just aft of the companionway to further back in the cockpit (not sure how far back, can anyone give a measurement? Half way? Two-thirds? Just in front of tiller? Or...?). Why was it moved, and what are the pros and cons of each location? Mine is a '74 so the original was just behind companionway. But some previous owner of my M17 installed a big wide windward sheeting traveler, mounted on top of the cockpit seats (forward, approximately above where the original was). It is in the way in multiple ways - blocks regular use of seat space, lounging use of seat space, companionway access. I am going to reduce the width and remount on cockpit floor. Before I do that I'd like to hear why I should keep it forward where the original traveler was, or, why I should move it back where the newer M17 travelers are. thanks, John S. -- John Schinnerer - M.A., Whole Systems Design -------------------------------------------- - Eco-Living - Whole Systems Design Services People - Place - Learning - Integration john@eco-living.net - 510.982.1334 http://eco-living.net http://sociocracyconsulting.com
Mine hooks onto the corners of the transom! It's weird but clears up the cockpit completely.. Jazz On Feb 4, 2016 11:17 PM, "John Schinnerer" <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

You have an M17, or an M15? The M15 is on the transom, yes...never seen an M17 with that...? cheers, John S. On 02/04/2016 09:29 PM, Jazzy wrote:

Last year I converted my M15 from the std transom setup to a traveler across the cockpit seats just in front of the hatch. It is surprising how quickly one becomes adjusted to taking that extra step when maneuvering in and out of the cabin. I find that the extra length of the traveler is worth having it on the seat. IMHO having it on the floor of the cockpit would restrict the amount of travel to make the effort ineffective.. I do not find it obstructing the ability to use the cockpit seats. 17 John. I'm not sure if it's a proper setup or not. I've only been out on it once and it seemed to work fine and really havent seen any other Montys. Jazz On Feb 4, 2016 11:53 PM, "John Schinnerer" <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

Can you post some pictures at some point of your traveler & mainsheet setup? Curious to see what it looks like. No rush, when you have an opportunity. thanks, John S. On 02/05/2016 10:00 AM, Jazzy wrote:

Put it about in the center, so when you tack there is plenty of room to slip between the end of the tiller and the mainsheet. maybe Dave S will chip in- his bote is handy. The further aft it is, the better leverage, but the downside is that you need more mainsheet the further aft it is. -----Original Message----- From: Jazzy Sent: Thursday, February 04, 2016 9:29 PM To: Montgomery Yahoolist Subject: Re: M_Boats: M17 traveler location Mine hooks onto the corners of the transom! Interesting. So you have no problem with the split backstay with that setup? Sounds like you would need a vang to flatten your main sometime. When you are on a run does the mainsheet cut across the cockpit ? <https://www.avast.com/sig-email> This email has been sent from a virus-free computer protected by Avast. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email> <#DDB4FAA8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Thu, Feb 4, 2016 at 11:29 PM, Jazzy <jazzydaze@gmail.com> wrote:

There was a thread about fore and aft traveler location in the cockpit and how wide to make the track as to how it would affect sheeting angle, etc. for racing a few months ago. On both my 17's I raised the track which was bolted through the cockpit floor up to just under the companionway step where I mounted it on a 4 inch wide board running from side to side inside the cockpit well. I found the sheeting angle was slightly improved and is was not in the way while moving around in the cockpit nor did it hamper sitting against the cabin. It also provided a bit wider step to land on as you stepped down into the cabin. I was also able to seal six holes (potential leaks) in the cockpit which were the old thru bolt holes. All in all a much better setup. <https://www.avast.com/sig-email> This email has been sent from a virus-free computer protected by Avast. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email> <#DDB4FAA8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Thu, Feb 4, 2016 at 11:16 PM, John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> wrote:
