Hi Bill, I installed a Fulton model MB1710 on my M17. It works very well with the Yamaha 4hp 4stroke long shaft outboard. I do have an earlier M17 with the cutout transom for motor operation. I have used a short shaft motor before, but the long shaft is a better fit. Absolutely use a backing plate, either hardwood or metal. PS, Theo may be replacing his motor mount, so you might want to discuss getting his.
