As this string has morphed into electronics I have a question about fully charged batteries. I have ProSport 6- 12 volt, 6 amp, battery charger from West Marine on my M17 which is charging a series 27 AGM Duel Purpose Battery also from West Marine. Both units were bought new. This set up, using oversized wire between the charger and battery will not charge the battery beyond 12.9 volts with no load. Anybody have any ideas about this? Do you mean when the battery is resting, after being charged? Or during charging, with the charger connected? A "12 volt" battery is actually a 12.6 volt battery. A fully charged and resting (three+ hours or more with no charging and no load) 12V lead-acid battery will normally read 12.6-12.7 volts. For a while after full charging, it may ready a bit higher, 12.8-12.9, but will come down to 12.6-12.7 usually within a few hours or less. If the charger is connected, then your voltage reading will vary depending on how the charger regulates charging voltage as the battery gets charged. It should not read more than 14.3-14.5 at max charge (battery low, charging full steam ahead). It will taper off to somewhere around 13.2-13.6 as the battery gets fully charged, depending on the charger or charge controller. Hi John, I guess my set up will top out at 12.9. All the charger self checks say everything is operating normally and from all that I have read today, 12.9 in within the limits of the various chargers from various manufacturers. thanks for all your info. Does the battery hold a charge? Last as long as expected? It could be that the finishing/trickle charge on your device is only 12.9. But usually that won't top off a battery, it needs to be 13.2 or so. Or, if your battery is losing capacity from sulfation, it could be that is part of the issue. cheers, John S.
