Re: M_Boats: water in cockpit the cockpit 2006 M15 ??
i found that the M15 would 'siphon' water into the cockpit (less than 1/2-inch) under these conditions - beam reach and downwind in lumpy seas and light wind (lots of boat motion) in lumpy seas more than two adults of average weight in the cockpit in moderate winds on a reach and downwind. once water enters the cockpit the floor must be level (or really full of water) for it to drain. beating to the wind you can have a couple of inches 'in the corners'. dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA former M15 owner visit SWEET PEA's www-site: http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Sat, 7/4/09, Sandra Anton <sailrsandy@yahoo.com> wrote: I just lauched my 2006 Montgomery 15 this week for the first time in Barnegat Bay NJ, and there is water in the sole of the cockpit almost all the time. Dave- Is your boat one of mine or one of Bob's? I believe his are significantly heavier than mine, just from looking at them in the water. Regarding water in the cockpit on the Montgomery 15.. A couple of points to consider: 3 people in the cockpit of an M_15 will squat the stern somewhat. Bob, You just mentioned you had added ballast of 75 pounds for an M-15. Is the placement of this ballast in the shoal keel and can I do it myself? Where would I get solid lead? I would suggest using lead shot. You lose some density, but save a LOT of labor casting the lead to the desired shape.

Hi Larry On that particular boat (Sandy's 2006) we used lead shot. There is not enough room in the keel for additional ballast, so we poured 50 pounds of shot into the belly of the hull just forward of the V berth bulkhead (interior liner)....spread it out to about 5/8th inch thick and layed up another lamination to cover that area. Some people just buy 2 bags of Shotgun shot at a local gun store and lay those bags forward. The other 25 pounds we did manage to feather into the keel/bilge area/forward. Try the 2 bags of shot (50 pounds) and see how she sails for you. Bob Eeg Montgomeryboats.com (949) 489-8227
