I am going to mount some small blocks on my 17 boom to pull down reefs in a hurry. On my larger boat, I ran a line from the becket on the block, under the boom, through the reef cringle, down to the sheave on the block, and forward to a cleat. I am wondering if this will work on my tiny boom as well, or if I should anchor the line on an eyestrap opposite the block. Anyone? Thanks, Tom Jenkins
I ran a line from an eye strap just aft of the perpendicular line of the cringle up through the cringle and back down to a block and turned it forward about 2 feet to a small cleat. When the sail is up all the way I have just enough line to make the run up to the cringle, back down to the block and throught the hollow in the cleat with a stopper knot. To reef the rear I just pull the line and lift the boom at the same time and cleat it off. It requires so little effort because the boom is so light. If I were to do it again I might be tempted to use another eye instead of the block. I use the same configuration for the forward cringle/tack. Thanks, Joe. Since I will have a small Dwyer block w/becket on each side behind the gooseneck (one for reef one, one for reef two), I will fasten the secure ends to the opposite beckets because there is no room for straps. On the aft blocks, the eye straps sound good. By the way, does anyone know the exact width of a 17 at the widest point (looks to be near the winches)? It's a tad tough to measure, and I need to set the gap between my new post roller guides. Is it really exactly 7'6"? Thanks, Tom Jenkins Scintilla On Nov 15, 2009, at 4:41 PM, Joe Murphy wrote:
