am considering buying a gps would like advise on best for price for coastal waters thanks g
Do you have any criteria? mapping or non-mapping handheld or fixed mount computer interface etc. I've always been pleased with the Garmin brand and have both a GPS76S and a Geico 201. Even narrowed to a single brand, there is a wide feature set to choose from. Their web site is http://www.garmin.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <Grove777@aol.com> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 11:33 AM Subject: M_Boats: gps question

I just got my new(to me) Monty 17 home, my wife had to drag me out of the boat last night, since it was pretty cold. I am still wondering about a lot of things. Most importantly I realized this morning on my first attempt to unraveal and step the mast, that I cant find the mast pin. My mast has one hole approx. 6" from the bottom and the "plate" has both a slide and a bolt hole. does the mast attach thru the slide or the single hole? | 0| single hole | || | side view | || | slide |_____| I am looking at close-ups of mast foot photos but can not find any gilbert

Congratulations on bringing the new baby home! The "pin" for attaching the mast on my M17 is a 3/8" (I believe) ss bolt with a wing nut. The bolt goes through the slot and the hole near the base of the mast. Stainless steel bolts are readily available at Ace Hardware. A wing nut would be satisfactory, but I just feel more secure with a lock nut and washer, probably because most of my mechanical experience is in aviation. thanks for the answres to the "mast foot" . Now I have the gotten the mast up and the forestay tightened. I am soo impressed with the hardware, all HARKEN block and tackle. Lots of pulleys and lots of line...too many pulleys and too many lines. Is there a rigging guide in the MSOG? I know about the jib halyard and the main halyard (although if I am doing this correctly the main halyard is a smaller diameter cable, I would have thought it would be the other way around) I have a line from one of the topmost blocks that is attached to one of the small foot cleats. And another that is attached to a small block about a quarter of the way down on the forward side of the mast. What are these for? Does anyone have any close up photos of the boom and how thw vang and downhaul are rigged? Sorry, I thought I could figure it out but I could use some visual help. When I read the archives its hard to follow the narrative. But HEY I got the mast up, and it wasnt to bad for the first time. gilbert BTW Temp here was around 60 the sun was out and the bay was blowing 10knots. quite a few sails out today. It was a beautiful day for a slow leisurely sail. Or figuring out my new sailboat.
I haven't had particularly good luck with hardware store stainless fasteners because of severe galling...to the point that they are useable one time only. When installing my boarding ladder I bolted it up dry first just to check the fit up. When I tried to back the nuts off I literally BROKE some brand new bolts because of galling. If I ever want to remove the new wooden motor mount clamp block on Busca I shall have to break the bolts, no doubt. Have not had that problem with the stainless bolts purchased at a marine chandlery. They seem to be made of a different type of stainless. Tod
your best defense on galling is always put a dap of high temperature copper base never-seize on the treads, not the aluminum based if you are in salt water
