Hi Jeff, Sorry to hear of the theft of your outboard, they are very easy to steal. My M23 came with a 95 Mariner 8hp extra long shaft 2 stroke with alternator and electric start. The motor seems perfect for the M23. It started immediately with a touch of a button, seemed to have plenty of power, and the noise level was acceptable. It does require mixing of oil and fuel. I used this motor for my first season with my 23. Last season, I tried my 85 Honda 10hp 4 stroke long shaft with alternator, manual start. The weight of both motors is actually quite close, around 78 lbs. The Honda is quieter, more powerful, has better gas economy, and starts in 2 to 3 pulls. I like the idea of using the cleaner 4 stroke. Either motor would do a fine job. Reading John Vigor's book, he estimates 4hp per ton of boat displacement, thus, our M23's would be looking for a 8hp auxiliary. I do miss the electric starting, very effortless. I know the newer 4 stroke Hondas are heavier than the older white and blue case model I have. Perhaps the Yamaha or other makes are lighter. Good luck!
