We went out of Santa Cruz harbor at about 2PM today, with the new EP main and #3 on. By the time we got to the Mile Buoy, it was piping up 15+ knots with gusts to maybe twenty. Call that a wind chop two to three feet with white caps well developed on a 3 foot sea swell. I had read Jerry's archive about mast rake and set mine back to what I think he was after. Close hauled and headed for the buoy, with no reef in the main, IOTA handled the wind, chop and swell in style! I had a nice, comfortable weather helm, maybe 10, more like 15, degrees of heel and felt fully in control and mostly dry. Had it come up another 3 or so knots, I likely would have wanted to put the reef in, but by no means felt overpowered as it was. It helped that the lovely and alluring JoAnnski, my reluctant first mate, added her delicate frame on the windward side. I had a great time and JoAnne felt a little less uneasy than usual as well. Two thoughts on the matter: 1. There is NOTHING like new sails! Comparisons to my old set are like night and day-especially close to the wind. I am very pleased with the EP sails and will place an order for the 110% in time. 2. Using the #3 first - and not reefing - as the breeze first builds worked out very well. The #3 allows a wide latitude of control. I would much rather snick in a reef on the main, had it continued to build, instead of going forward to change sails. I think the new #3 will become my "go to" sail for the breezy summer days of Monterey Bay.
