I was up at Niagara-on-the-Lake 2 weeks ago. I'd walk by the local sailing club every morning and wish I was able to join them on the lake. On 6/21/13, Bill Wickett <billwick@gmail.com> wrote:
That is a lovely area Michael. Have not had the chance to be on the water there, just toured by road. Your day trip sounds like a real success.
We crossed over the west end of Lake Ontario yesterday. 10 nm of open water from 50 Point to Bronte Harbour. Steady 5 knots under full main and genoa and newly installed tiller pilot. We switched to the assymetrical spinnaker for the last 4 miles and made a steady 5.5. (no tiller pilot operating for that). No tidal currents to contend with. Just 200 miles of open water to the east, from where the wind was coming from, so a good swell was running with all that fetch.
The return trip was not so thrilling. A long tack down the lake, seemingly away from our destination, so we could pick up the proper angle to close haul back to 50 Point. An extra hour for the return trip. The extra hours of sunlight this time of year are wonderful aren't they?

Michael, Are you referring to "Cape Cod" , Cape May or......? I assume the 7.5 knots was gps "over the ground"? Sounded like a real "Nantucket Sleigh Ride". Nice report. Tom B.

After 21 days off the water I decided to make a day trip to Cape Lookout. Predicted winds of 12 to 16 knots were not perfect for sailing the narrow channels, shoals, bars, & barely awash islands of the route to the Cape but I couldn't resist that the tides would be favorable both ways. With 2 reefs & no foresail the M-15 was running 6.5 to 7.5 knots with the outgoing tide.
After anchoring I changed to an intermediate jib (40% less area than the standard jib). Still dipped the rail a bit in the gusts. Local wind station was recording winds of 18, gusts to 21 knots. Tide was coming against the wind so experienced soaking spray on the in the narrow Channel.
I plan to go back sometime in the Fall but hope to make it a 3-4 day/80 mile trip (with a car shuttle) from the an inland ramp down to the coast. Any East Coast Monty sailors interested?
