Andrei, Although the board-up draft is shallow, the fixed rudder, according to the line drawing I have of the 17, draws only a couple of inches less than the centerboard in the down position, which is about three feet. To make use of the 1' 9" draft, you need a kickup rudder such as that available from Idasailor. That said, steering with the rudder in any position except straight down is not easy, so making use of the kickup feature is strictly an emergency operation.
