Actually I see quite a few people towing kayaks around Carrot Island and Shakleford. It's a great way to get up close to the wild ponies. Joe, I have the plan, although it might not be practical in your skinny water. Tow an M17 behind a NS 27 as your sailing dinghy/tender. I would have killed for such a combo in Bahia Magdalena and the Sea of Cortez. It probably would not be against the law of the sea to tow a kayak behind the 17 to cover all the bases. Tom, Oh, absolutely. I knew I was sacrificing quite a lot going from a NS to the M17. Doing everything in a cabin on my hands and knees instead of standing upright is just a constant throwback to backpacking. Only now it is a fiberglass tent instead of nylon. And it wasn't just size differences. On one hand I watch the weather more carefully but on the other hand I don't pay much attention to tides. Just the opposite with the NS. Bottom line... once the sails are set and balanced it's sailing. Whether on a NS or a M17, it's sailing. And that's where I's likes to be. Joe, The size of a sailor makes a big difference in choice of a cruising vessel. My wife and I are both fairly close to 6', so the NS headroom was the clincher. My wife seriously wonders why I don't bring the 27 back from Hawaii so we don't have to contort our aging bodies in an M17. Good question, but I say merely that humans are complex (a euphemism for irrational). Tom

Five years ago when I was looking the love of my life, boat that is, I first looked at a couple of FC's. We saw a primo one in Annapolis but my daughter (very wise woman) said that if I ever expected to take Mom cruising I'd need something with a tad more interior room. Then the broker chimed in that she had a NS for me to see. Suprised that the price difference wasn't that bad, I opted for the NS. The FC is very similar to the Renegade, Larry and Lin Pardey's first major cruiser. They cruised full time on it for many years. Joe

Joe,
I'd love to see/sail a Falmouth 22 at some point in time, they look so traditional and classic. There is a nice one for sail in Chicago right now. Rare too, under 40 made. Kind of like an M23! (19 made?)
