the only location you EVER use silicon on your Montgomery or Sage is if you re-bed/replace the stock cabin windows. for rebedding above the waterline items use 3M 4200 or equiv. (silicon _is_not_ equiv.) if you need to re-bed an underwater fitting, or fitting that will go under water when the boat is underway/heeling, you use 3M 5200 or equiv. the only stock montgomery boats with underwater (close to underwater) fittings are the galley model M17s, the older M17s with cockpit drains below the waterline (like my '83 M17 SWEET PEA), the newer M17's with drains that exit on the transom (they go under water when the boat is motored or when you have 3-4 people in the cockpit). some OK sealant information- http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/WestAdvisorView?langId=-... i show the rebedding process on my M17's www-page - http://m17-375.webs.com/rebeddinghardware.htm
The boat store recommends silicon sealant
WOW .. this is so _incorrect_, IMO, in most cases. :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.com --- On Mon, 3/12/12, beowulf2@cox.net <beowulf2@cox.net> wrote:
Hello All: I am doing some re-bedding, etc, on my M15. The boat store recommends silicon sealant, some on this site recommend 5200, while others recommend some variant. Could someone please give me the rule of thumb, if there is one, concerning when to use what sealant.
