The 4hp gets my vote too. Tohatsu makes the Mercury 4hp as well. I think if I was doing inland lakes I'd consider the 2hp Honda. On bodies of water with strong currents (like SF Bay) the ability to hook up an external tank is priceless. It gets me back to work before Monday when the wind flakes out. On second thought... Is that really an advantage? Jim M-17 "Spirit" On Mar 17, 2010, at 8:10 PM, Joe Murphy wrote:
I'm using a Tohatsu 6hp with the long shaft. It only weighs 54lbs and runs like a champ. I don't have to run it full bore even in rough contrary seas. Are you sure a 2hp is sufficient?? I've got a Honda 6HP longshaft on my M17 'Orion' here on the east coast (Long Island, NY) on the ocean. The cost difference vs. slightly smaller engines is negligible, the boat is totally capable of holding the negligible additional amount of weight on the stern, ....having the extra power....priceless!!!!!

Hi Bill, We're using a long shaft Honda 2 HP on our M15. We've used both long and regular shaft Honda 2 HP's and have had better results with the long shaft. We're using a West Marion adjustable bracket. I don't know if a 2 HP will be strong enough for an M17 in heavy winds. sal M15 - 1986 - #361 M23 - #2 - being built In a message dated 3/17/2010 7:49:33 P.M. I believe some M17 owners are using Honda 2HP on their boats. If so are you using the long or short shaft version? I have the factory installed adjustable outboard bracket.
