Mike, I think you will find that, if you want to buy a Honda, you will need to go to a Honda dealer. In my search for a Honda 2 for our M-15 I was unable to find a Honda dealer who would/could ship a motor to me. All required that I come to their place of business to purchase. Some explained that this was a Honda corporate policy. No sales outside your area. Now, if you want a Tohatsu/Mercury/Nissan, they're happy to ship wherever. However, you can't get an air cooled 4 stroke 2 hp that weighs 28 lbs from them. I bought a Tohatsu 6hp 4 stroke from onlineoutboards.com for our Flicka and was pretty happy with the result. BTW, no shipping, no tax. Rik On Sat, Mar 5, 2011 at 7:24 PM, Beowulf <beowulf2@cox.net> wrote:
Hello All: I found an online site called Boats.net that sells outboard motors with free shipping. I am looking to buy a 2 hp Honda for my M15 and am thinking about going with this seller. Has anyone an the list had any dealings with this seller?

i agree with randy. after a careful on-line search you can find sellers that will ship the motor. being an on-line purchase do some research about the seller.
boat shows are good for finding a good sale price.
as you are not close to a outboard seller i am guessing you are not near a shop that can work on the motor. outboards are very good these days, but do need maintenance at fairly high intervals - a break in period, and then ever 20-30 hours of use or once a year (whichever comes first). the basic stuff isn't hard if you get an outboard manual and have basic tool use skills.

I bought my last Nissan on line after comparing prices and I think it was free shipping. Came in a big box, with a bottle of oil and a big reminder that says to put oil in it before starting. I think there was ten hour break in period.... not sure after year if I have hit that mark. The 4 hp Nissan/Tohatsu/Mercury you probably know are the same 4 stroke motor.

I appreciate all the information and discussion on motors. I have a Tohatsu 2.5 horsepower 2 stoke motor for my Montgomery 15 which pushes the boat along fine, but is messy, isn't allowed on Lake Tahoe, and is sometimes finicky (or maybe it is the operator). What I have been using most often is a small trolling motor which actually pushes the boat along fine, especially on the little lakes I usually sail. I was envious of all the Honda 2 horsepower 4 strokes I saw on boats at Lake Havasu and this discussion has helped me understand motor things a lot better all around.
The one thing I don't see anything about is where to buy a motor. New or, ideally, used. I live out in the middle of nowhere so there isn't a local outboard motor dealer around here and I haven't found obvious sources online. Since it may not be practical to ship a motor, I realize I will probably need to pick one up when I travel to a city like Reno, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. Any advice on where to find a motor new or used? Thanks!
