Hello Jim, I have a 3 Step telescoping ladder made by Windline. I like it because it is of stainless steel and feels quite strong. It also telesopes down to a relatively small size and thus does not stick up above the transom. The down side is that it has a very small footprint. To account for this I mounted a 1/2 inch marine grade plywood backing plate to the inside of the transom. I also made sure that I mounted it high enough to be on the thicker part of the transom. To gain access to the area I installed a Lewmar deck hatch on the starboard side seat. This has given me the added benefit of additional cockpit storage. Happy Sailing (or dreaming of sailing...)
