Sandy, I replaced mine with all-rope years ago using 3/16, which works fine. I think 1/4 would be okay also, and easier on the hands. I had someone work on my boat and added a roller reefing jib and ran all lines back to the cockpit. I feel much safer on the boat when single handing which is most of the time. My main halyard is too short and I want to replace it. Right now I just tied another piece of rope to the end as an interim measure. Has anyone replaced theirs with an all rope main halyard? If so what size line will go through the block at the top of the mast? The one that came with the boat looks like 3/8". I bought Frank Durants "Finally". Havent renamed her yet though. I am doing this with the mast up so plan on using a messenger line through a small splice at the top of the new main halyard. My concern is I cant remember how big that block is at the top of the mast. I figure 60 feet of line will give me a 10 foout tail after the line goes through the cam cleat we installed on the cabin top for the main halyard.
