If you go back to the archives, there is a recommendation to try Brasso, the metal cleaner commonly (and inexpensively) available. I tried it and it worked great on my 1986 M-17. It brought back the shine with little effort. It is a very fine abrasive. I used high grit (1000) wet sanding on the more difficult spots.
