Ron and Cathryn,
Welcome to the Montgomery clan. I'm sure you'll enjoy hula pie as
much as the rest of us enjoy our boats. And I really like the name, but
I'm not sure why.
I can't offer you a lot of advice on the thru-hull, other than I had an
old non-working knotmeter paddlewheel unit that was a thru-hull about 4
inches in diameter, and took it to a guy that repaired that stuff.
Basically, he refilled and faired the hole with epoxy. I decided I'd have
any structural work done by pros until I learn what I'm doing and, as
everyone on the list knows, I've made a conscious decision never to do
that. But there are a few folks on the list who will probably have some
good ideas.
I also did a search on Yahoo (+repair +thru-hull) and found several
ideas. Click on this for the results:

or alternate spelling,

Most of them used West System materials (no relation to West Marine), the link is on the MSOG web site or go directly to http://www.westsystem.com/ .
Once again, welcome, and don't hesitate to ask questions, though, as you've found out, a lot of info is in the archives.
