Jim, Thanks for your quick reply. Much appreciated. I spent another hour+ re-measuring and came to the conclusion the coaming is the best spot to simplify the install. Going to the seat requires a 16" reach with drop brackets and socket extensions combined, and any of the standard sizes won't give that reach. Coaming install requires 8" total of push rod extension (combination of 2 smaller sizes) and I believe just a 1" drop bracket from the bottom of the tiller. Of course no dealers stock that stuff so I will have to get them ordered. Thanks again, Bill Wickett On Sat, Aug 6, 2011 at 11:22 AM, Jim Ellsworth <j_ellsworth@earthlink.net>wrote:
Bill,
I mounted mine on the coaming and ordered an extension. My stock tiller has a bracket on the bottom, but when I ordered my Ida Sailor rudder and tiller I had them change the dimensions so I just had to put the attachment pin on the top of the tiller and eliminated the need for the bracket.
The unit is plugged in to the power socket so it is not likely that you would lose the unit overboard. I just disconnect the unit from the tiller and rest it on the transom coaming and swing it onto the tiller when I want to use it.
Just be sure when you put the pin holder on the coaming that you mount it through a block of wood mounted on the inside. On my first attempt the wood block came loose making the pin holder loose which started to crack my gel coat. I re-attached and it has been fine so far with lots of use over time.
Hope that helps,

As a follow up to my tp wiring question last week, could the collective brain trust shed any light on tiller pilot positioning.
The Raymarine ST1000+ is pretty specific on positioning from the rudder pivot point.
My question is to any who may have installed a tp is; to meet the required positioning, did you go with installing on the seat surface and raise it up to tiller level with a combination of optional pedestal socket rod or brackets on the tiller bottom face OR did you mount the tp up on the coaming surface and extend the reach by using the available push rod extensions?
The coaming mount seems more straight forward, but could be a bit riskier with the possibility of losing the tp over the side.
Hope you understand all the above, and thanks for any experience you can relate.
