I have a 77 M 17. I had a hole in my original rudder that was supposed to be a lifting and tie off when you were transporting the boat on a trailer. I never use it and it was a sources for rotting and cracking. My second new rudder, I left the hole out of it and never missed it. Just pull the rudder up by hand and never worry about the hole.
