Hi, Jeff I suppose I would base my choice on where/how I did my sailing. Since Busca goes all over and can potentially have to do an all-day motor (in the event of no wind + gotta get back to work) I opted to round UP on the power instead of down. If I were retired (i.e. no schedule) and just sailed in the Chesapeake (mostly soft bottom) I'm sure I could have lived with just the two hp outboard and saved weight and fuel and $ and perhaps my back. My sister's 22' S2 (>3,000#) is equipped with a 9.9. My Tartan 26 (5,200#) has a 5 hp gas inboard. In the spring, instead of messing with the inboard, I'm thinking I'll strap my 5 hp Honda onto the transom and see how well she does. My guess is I'll want to go with an 8 hp since many of the Tartans went to 7 hp... So....I guess what I'm saying is that I wouldn't be afraid to go with 6 hp on an M23 if my situation were something like in the second paragraph but just to be sure, is there any chance you can borrow a buddy's outboard to see how well she does? I would be interested in hearing what HP motors others are using and how happy they are with it. I am considering a 6HP and a 9.9HP 4 stroke long shaft. The 6 would be nicer as it is much lighter and I could bring it home instead of leaving it on the boat to be stolen again. The 9.9 would have more power, but it would be difficult to move each sailing session due to the weight. Any suggestions? Thanks.
