Sorry for checking in late on this conversation, but I think the smell of resin is the rule rather than the exception with M boats (and others too). I've owned three (2 M17s and an M15), and my recollection of the odor beneath the v-berth in the M15 was that it smelled of glass resin (the flotation added some spice too), but nothing that made me think it was out of the ordinary. Is the smell overwhelming even with hatch and cushion in place? Weird if so. Maybe all that acetone damaged your sniffer? Just kidding. When you cut 'glass, you're going to get a strong resin smell.
