I think they would work well along with a Boom Vang. The fiberglass rod type boom kickers are adjustable in the mast groove; with a nice 4 part boom vang you could have a solid boom that wouldn't need a topping lift. Most likely you could have better sail-shape on a beam reach and a run. Also in light air the boom kicker would relax any downward tension (weight of the boom) to give the sails a smooth shape. (?)
