Just be sure you leave the topping lift loose. It'll just either fall away from the sail to lee, or conform to the sail's shape to windward. t

I try to rig up a topping lift when I sail. It holds up the boom when the main is lowered. The first few times I rigged, I forgot to tie it on. Then I would have to lower the boom to tie it on, and then raise the boom a second time. I'm getting better about remembering things. Or maybe it's getting worse, I can't remember.
