Another autopilot story--recent and significant for performance boaters. Joyon is mythic. t IDEC Lost on the Rocks Less than One Day after Setting Transatlantic Record July 8 - Brittany, France It's heartbreaking to learn that Francis Joyon lost his record-setting trimaran IDEC on the rocks of southwestern Brittany less than one day after breaking the solo transatlantic record. One of the great things about the modest Joyon is that he's set the around-the-world and transatlantic solo records doing everything himself, as opposed to having a giant team as has been the case with Ellen MacArthur. Alas, maybe Joyon did one too many things himself. For, exhausted after finishing the tremendous record run, he put his mighty 92-ft tri on autopilot and fell into a deep sleep while heading to France. The autopilot steered the boat off course, and the next thing Joyon knew, it was pitch black and his beloved trimaran was being broken up on the rocks. Joyon's injuries are primarily emotional.
