Saturday I went out to sail my 1991 M15. My
wife said no. My daughter said no. All my friends and neighbors who
keep asking "when are you going to take me sailing" said no. Being the
good son, I then asked my mom. She said yes. She's 82 and has sailed
about once a year with me for 15 years.
As always with this mighty mouse of a boat, no need
to pull out the trolling motor, just sailed out of the slip. The most dangerous
part of this departure was yelling back to 3 separate groups on docks,
explaining what manufacture the boat was; and no that it was not new but 11
years old.
There was an impromptu gathering of 8 boats to race
down wind, the length of Lake Wallenpaupak, Pa. I yelled back to 6 of the
boats what type of boat the Montgomery 15 was, as we passed them by. The O
Day 26 did not ask, I had beaten him before. There were Catalina 22's, a
Precision 16.5, a Hunter 26 water ballast, Cirrus 22 and a 26' boat I couldn't
identify. Winds were about 6 to 8 mph. We went wing to wing with a
wisker pole on a working jib. The center board was up to reduce drag. My
mom had the tiller for 8 miles and never accidently jibed. We were the
lead boat at the end of the down wind leg. I am impressed. Everyone
dispersed at that point so I did not get a good feel of up wind performance
compared to these other boats.
I have had a Mcgreggor 26 and a Seaward 23 at
this lake in past years. This is my first first. I like this
boat.
