Doug: Based on set of dimensions I put together from my cast iron CB, the distance between the CB Pivot pin and CB stopper pin is about 39 inches. As the boat came to me, the stopper pin was a large flat head screw. And by large, I mean the flat head was maybe an inch or more in diameter. Flat, so it was flush with the surface and streamlined. If you have one of these and can't find it, it may have been painted over. But in any event, it is visible in the CB slot from below. The back of the CB is curved in a consistent radius to follow along the stopper pin, with a tang on top that rests upon it when the board is fully down. Newer models replace this tang with a stopper knot in the CB pendent. Can't go lower than the knot you tie in it. What you may find is the stopper pin is bent and mangled from the pounding it takes. As I recall, that flat head screw was not much more than 1/4" or 5/16" in diameter. Plenty enough beef to hold the board up, but not plenty enough to take a heavy pounding if the CB is dropped on it. The nearly 180 pounds of cast iron CB can dish out a beating. Beyond that, the original screw did not pass all the way through the keel as the pivot pin does. It was bedded into the other side. If that is in good shape, fine. If not, the problem becomes what to do about it. A replacement flat head screw of that size is nearly impossible to find and what to screw into if you could? I drilled straight on through and replaced the mangled flat screw with a bolt and locking nut. Measure the amount of clearance you have and size up your bolt to close the gap as much as possible. You will have more beef to rest on. Also the tang on my board was worn down some. Sizing the replacement stopper bolt up a notch or two some gave what was left of the CB tang more area to rest on. That was 10 years ago and it's still "hanging" in there! On Aug 13, 2011, at 11:26 PM, Doug Vogel wrote:
Hi folks,
Tomorrow is "replace my frayed CB pendent "day. I will lift the stern of my M-17 from some beams in my friends barn. I looked today for any indication for the 3/8" stopper pin where the CB's hook comes to rest. Is there a measurement from the pivot bolt ? I will keep searching tomorrow. Also it needs to be driven out from port to Starboard ? or visa versa ?
Thanks,
