Ah. Yeah, my interest is in the depth only, not the fish! I often sail in shallow waters. Tomales Bay is particularly tricky that way, especially the northern part. So, I do look for the seaweed. Definitely interested in that fishfinder, especially if it runs on AAA batteries rather than gel. Would be MUCH easier to deal with. I am amazed at how little draft the M15 needs. It is easier to deal with than my Vagabond. The Vagabond has a huge daggerboard with about 3.5 feet of draft. And when it would hit I would come to a grinding halt! The Monty even with board down is only about 2 feet, and should kick up to about 15 inches, so it might give me a chance! I brought her back to the dock with the tide out at Miller Park last weekend. Around the dock in those conditions would always be dicey in the Vagabond. I would have to gradually bring the daggerboard up so as not to hit. It was a whole production. If you are currently using that fishfinder, I might be able to find one online and have it shipped. Lemme check it out. Daniel On Apr 8, 2011, at 10:15 PM, Bob and Judy Becker wrote:
Dan, That transducer is for a Hawkeye Fishfinder FF3355P that uses 4 AAA batteries and works very well. I have one available if you are ever in the Walnut Creek area. Fishfinders are another topic. I used it to locate fish and the bottom, but it did not seem to improve my luck at fishing, which was never very good, and I still occasionally would drag the rudder in the mud. I always wondered if fish could sense the beam and associated it with danger. I relied on watching for bottom growing seaweed more than the instrument, but it was fun to watch the readout and speculate about the unseen. Bob

There is some sort of transducer mounted inside the cabin that is for a depth finder. Not sure the manufacturer, but I think I can find out. The think is properly mounted in a recess near the bow in the hull. Looks like it will sound right through the hull without difficulty. There is a nice long wire coming out of it with some kind of jack made to plug into a unit. Now, my M15 does not have an electrical system, nor am I inclined to set one up. I do have a nice small deep cycle gel battery with 36 amp/hours that I can use with my Minkota electric trolling motor. So, what kind of set up would make sense here? What would be a good way to set something up?
