That sounds exactly like what I saw on a boat I looked at a number of years ago (and described earlier in this thread). I wonder if it was the same one? The one I saw was at Hooper's Yachts near Mpls./St. Paul and happened to have wooden spreaders and a hand-carved tiller. It was white. The current (then) owner was a woman, but it had earlier belonged to a guy named Dave Nixon on Lake Superior, who owns (owned?) a yacht charter business. It was a pre-1981, but I don't know what year. Anyway, I think it was a semi-serious problem. ie. not that it couldn't be fixed, but not something you'd want to get into if you were expecting to buy a boat more-or-less ready to sail.
