a note here from Jerry about the M15's shrouds and forestay - Regarding the Montgomery 15: the only change I ever made to the standing rigging during the production life of the boat was to increase the length of the forestay about an inch and shorten the shrouds about half that much. Initially, there was an amazing coincidence in that all three wires were nearly the same length; plenty close enough so that the stay adjusters would take up the difference if the forestay was set in one of the last two holes. Only problem was that new sailors would try to balance all the wires to as close to the center of the adjusters as possible which set up the mast too plumb; the 15 sails best with the mast raked aft. As soon as I became aware that people were doing this I simply lengthened the forestay and shortened the shrouds, encouraging owners to set up the mast with a little rake. I hate to see Montgomery boats going slow! I had my M15, and the same for how i tuned the Glessers' M15, for for about 2-3" of rake. for me this gave the correct feeling of weather helm (just a bit and then the boat told/tells me when she needs to be reefed). if you are able the best way to have new rigging made is to send the old (note the above concerning that the 'early boats' and the 'later' concerning standing rigging length). :: Dave Scobie ________________________________ From: "Hughston, Larry@DGS" <Larry.Hughston@dgs.ca.gov> Sent: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 10:46 AM David, I own a 1981 Monty 15 and replace my rigging right away in 2006 when I got it back to Sacramento from Ridgecrest (Mojave, Edwards ARB here in California). Got it done (using original measurements) at Morrison Marine here in the Sacramento, CA. Talk to Jerry Montgomery first though to be sure about the right amount of rake in the mast. Also make sure you want to stay with the forestay turn buckle or quick adjustment (the one with holes and no threads) you may currently have. Fair Winds....Larry, with old 189 M-15 -----Original Message----- From: On Behalf Of David Grah Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2013 2:58 PM The shrouds on my Montgomery 15 each have a broken wire and I figure it's time to replace them and the forestay at the same time. Can anyone suggest where to get new ones made? I assume I measure my old ones and have the new ones made the same length. I also wonder if, before I get the new rigging, if I should check to see if the rigging should be tweaked in any way. I thought Jerry Montgomery helped with rigging and sold rigging, but haven't heard back from him yet. The boat is 1986 and I think is on its second set of rigging. The logistics of getting someplace for someone to look the rigging over could be difficult, but maybe I can be patient and maybe more wires won't break and fray. Thanks for leads and suggestions!
