Hello Michelle, I think it would be best to concentrate on the weight factor more than the horsepower. An M-12 undoubtedly weighs more than a 12' aluminum fishing boat and a fishing boat will take 4-5HP motor. A fishing boat does fine squatting in the rear a from the weight and power of the motor while in motion, a sailboat does not, at least while under sail. I would buy the lightest motor I could that has a top fill tank. The top fill tank eliminates the need for an auxillary tank (more weight) and these factors should help keep the boat from squatting under sail. A 2HP Honda (4-cycle) or a 3.5HP Nissan/Tohatsu (2-cycle) would be my choices. I have a Nissan 3.5HP for my inflatable auxillary and the motor weighs in at about 25 pounds. I keep a 1qt aluminum water bottle around for extra gas to refill it if necessary. Good sailing, Ian M-17 The Mighty "Seaweeble"

Good Afternoon. I need the minimum-maximum HP rating for my 12' Montgomery. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michelle
