I've had an Elliott-Pattison mainsail on my 1976 M17 for 4 seasons and am very satisfied. My sail is what you might call pret-a-porter in that it is what you get if you just tell E-P to send you their standard M17 mainsail. It is loose-footed with regular battens. Two points based on my experience: First, there is some conflicting information out there about the foot dimension. My sail fits my boat, but with very little room to spare for the outhaul tackle. If there is a next time, I probably will make the foot 2-3" shorter. Second, my sail was supposed to have only one set of reef points but I got a second set by mistake (at no charge). I'll probably never use it, but the second reef seems very deep. At a guess, it probably leaves only about 35 sq. ft. flying and seems to be targeted at winds of 25+ knots. If I was doing it over, I probably would ask for a slightly shallower reef targeted at 20+ knots of wind. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats <montgomery_boats-bounces+swwheatley=comcast.net@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of bownez@juno.com Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2018 12:09 PM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: M_Boats: Mainsail Listers, Looking at ordering a new mainsail for my 1976 vintage M17. The last one I had made did not fit quite right, and I muddled through with it. Does anyone (Jerry?) have the stock dimensions? The original spec sheet says it is 77 sq. ft in size. I'm looking at: loose footed luff cars 2 reef points full batten on top Thoughts?
