I have a 78 Monty 17 and the top of the transom was weak and flimsy. I took a moto tool and cut the "cap" off and was able to dig out the rotting plywood. I then made a cardboard pattern, then to some 4 mm plywood for trial fit, I cut marine ply and soaked it well in epoxy , made a slurry and inserted in into the slot and re attached the "Cap" I previously cut off and epoxied it in place. I have since painted the transom and cannot see where I made the cuts. The transom is hard a rock and neat and clean. I will over drill when attaching shrouds etc and fill those over sized holes so it isolates my plywood. A slow but VERY satisfying project. How he heck would you reinforce the transom? Tear it apart and reglass? Seems like a crazy project, especially if you had to crawl under the deck.
On my '76 model M17 only the upper half of the transom was backed by a 3/4" piece of plywood that was glassed in. I had a local fiberglass man extend the plywood backing the rest of the way down and glass it all in. This was not just for the motor, but also to support the swim ladder I added on the starboard side. Definately a miserable project. How he did it I can't say, but he didn't tear the transom apart. _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats When posting, remember that there is no privacy on the Internet!
