I am using 5/16" on my M17 with my relatively new furling jib. Nice combo of not too small in the hand when pulling hard, and not too bulky feeling for the size of the boat & tackle. With the size of the headsail (150 Genoa) and short length of sheet between clew and block I doubt there would be an issue with weight of sheet affecting light air performance. For us cruisers that is! Racers will no doubt disagree :-) cheers, John On 3/7/20 8:49 AM, Mike Z wrote:
A rookies take.
Lighter the better for light wind.
Heavier is nicer in the hand.
I would lean to 5/16 sta-set, but 3/8 might be more practical.

I need to add a missing jib sheet. The existing one looks to be 7/16" diameter. Casey (This Old Boat) recommends polyester double braid for sheets ("Period."). A sail-rite document ( https://www.sailrite.com/PDF/Rope%20Selection%20Recommendations.pdf) has a table of recommended diameters, and it looks like 5/16" would work for my M17.
Does that sound reasonable?
