This question comes up periodically and usually ends up being a choice between the CDI FF2 or the Schaefer Snap-Furl 500. The Schaefer is a more sophisticated unit and has the advantage of an upper swivel, which permits relatively easy adjustment of halyard/luff tension using the boat's existing halyard. It has the disadvantage of being more expensive and a little fussy to install. The CDI uses an integral halyard system which is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because it makes for foolproof installation. It is a curse because it makes it a PITA to adjust halyard/luff tension. The bottom line is if you are someone who likes to fiddle with halyard/luff tension, get the Schaefer. If you're someone who thinks of halyard/luff tension as a "set it and forget it" kind of thing, get the CDI. My M17 came to me with a CDI FF1 unit (which, by the way, worked fine, making me wonder whether the FF2 is really necessary). Strictly as a matter of personal preference, I replaced it with the Schaefer. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats <montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of TIm Brown Sent: Friday, January 31, 2020 3:40 PM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: Furl for Montgomery 17 Hi. I am thinking about installing a jib furl on my Montgomery 17. I had a local rigger look at the boat this morning and he says the boat is too heavy for the "Harken Small Boat" and he is unsure which furl is best suited for this boat. He is going to do some research but I thought I would put it out to you all as well. The head sail is a genoa 150% Also, is it reasonable to expect the furl to be able to reef?
