Hi Rick, Westport is a good spot. I have never launched there so can't give you any information.
From Westport you can sail across Lake Champlain to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum - a delightful place to visit.
We used to base at Essex Marina, in Essex, NY - the next town north of Westport. The marina has a dirt launch ramp after going down a very steep roadway to the marina. It is tiny, but after using it several times, and getting used to the hill climb as you go back up to Main Street, I found the heart palpitations greatly reduced. The other place we used often with the MICRO, the ComPac 16 and the M15 was the New York State ramp in Wilsboro. A very broad concrete ramp with excellent parking spaces. This would be a good starting spot if you want to sail over to Burlington, VT, but first you have to sail out of Wilsboro Bay which is about 1.5 miles long, before reaching Lake Champlain itself. This is sheltered water and a nice place to sail, if you just want to putter around. Happy sailing Connie PS. I now have a DSL service so also a new e-mail address. The new address is: chbenneck@sbcglobal.net
