I know the question is directed at Jerry, but when this topic came up a few years ago, the Jerry/Bob response was that the lifting rudder was much stronger for offshore sailing . . . I would love to have had a stock factory kick-up to install, but am instead adapting and tweaking a custom-built rudder by trial and error . . . But next season, I'm positive I'll get it right . . . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Smith, Tom" <Tom.Smith@itron.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, December 11, 2003 1:41 PM Subject: M15 kick up rudder on M17? Speaking of the M15 rudder, has anyone explored the idea of a beefier version of this setup for the M17? Jerry, was there some reason you didn't carry this idea over to the larger boat? I agree the M17 rudder is vulnerable (I have the damaged M17 rudder to prove it). Just wondering... t Tom Smith & Jane Van Winkle Sandpoint, Idaho M15-345, Chukar M17-064, Unnamed -----Original Message----- From: chbenneck@juno.com [mailto:chbenneck@juno.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2003 7:23 AM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Grounding durability Hi Steve, The rudder on an M15 will kick up by itself when it hits and obstruction; or you raise the tiller and the rubber comes up. A very neat and elegant design that works beautifully.
