I’m hitting reply so people can see how long it was to scroll to the bottom of 17 reply/untrimmed messages. I apologize to the group for coming across too harshly. I lost my father unexpectedly a couple of days ago and I’m under incredible stress. That being said, when things devolve into private conversations about airplanes on a public forum specifically for Montgomery boats...I’m done. I’ve unsubscribed in the past for this reason after selling my M-15, despite thoroughly enjoying the actual M boats discussions that I’m able to wade through, and I joined up again after buying a second M-15 that is now also gone. I just don’t have time to spend my life scrolling past unrelated content, our lives are filled with too much of that as it is. Dave Scobie, please unsubscribe me. You all enjoy yourselves, and tell your family members you love them. Never forget that life is short, don’t waste it. Rusty www.rustyknorr.weebly.com

Sorry, but what does this have to do with transporting a Monty, or a rudder? Can we really not take the time to trim a post or start a new one? This makes it impossible to search info you need in archives, massively clogs up the daily digest with endless reply streams, is lazy and is super annoying. We literally need a monthly reminder to TRIM YOUR POSTS, START A NEW THREAD WITH A NEW SUBJECT.

I am looking for some advice for a permanent mounted stern ladder for my 1976 M-17. I want to order one that I know will fit. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Or reply, but erase all previous parts of the message unless you want to keep a selected bit to create immediately accessible context. I am guilty here as well. I do find the erasure method easier than using the montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com and entering a new subject line. YMMV.

OOPS, just read this email. Did not mean to cause trouble with your wife who wants to be there when you risk your life.? We can sail around here together. My wife may even accompany us since yours will be too. She would have someone to talk to. Oh yeah, I am 74, been retired for about ten years and am trying to stay in some sort of shape. I have most everything on my MOnty set up for single handing with a whole lot of "back work". My wife is understanding bout her todo list, fortunately.

Edward, I am retired, so my dear loving and loved wife does like her peace and quiet with me out of ?our? house, but she is a worrier and wants to watch when I kill myself - so no single-handing; that?s why I bought an M17 rather than an M15. I love the M15 and like the M17. She thinks the M15 is too small, and I want to minimize her unhappiness. Because I?m 72 and endurance is waning, the honey-do list is going to take a while, even with the ?new? M17 waiting for me. I will honor my pledge of ?list completion before launch? Corpus Christi Bay is a 3 hr tow and we plan to sail there occasionally. I also hope to tow to a few of my bucket list sailing sites, but wife Penny is a bit negative on that. I also plan to participate in a two boat informal race series on Lake Travis with Ken Tothero and his Sage 17. Yes, I know he will beat me.
A key part of the pact to allow purchase of this boat is my pledge to complete a lengthy nonsailing to-do list before we launch. I?m hoping for sometime this summer. Wish me perseverance and endurance.

Didn?t know I was on a site with rigid rules. Thought it was for enjoyment and hearing from others. Frankly as I followed the transport issues it reminded me of my Army days in meetings with colonels wanting to impress with their superior knowledge for a simple issue a private could resolve in 15 minutes.
I?m here for enjoyment of others and if I am to adhere to rigid rules that I gave have up long ago and now at 80 I may in the wrong place.
I?ve enjoyed it so far but when someone complains about someone not adhering to a rule as it was done disturbs me.

It's a reasonable request, made perhaps somewhat harshly.
At the least, having an accurate subject helps everyone on the list know at a glance whether a post is of interest to them or not.
It's just a friendly helpful thing to do on a list.
Think of it like all the friendly helpful things we do as sailors for other sailors - grab a line, help tie up or cast off, snag that hat/pail/pfd/sponge that got dropped or blew overboard, give an assist on the ramp, getting on or off the trailer, etc. etc. and so on.
When we "reply" we can simply edit the "subject" field of the reply, if we are changing the subject. There's no need to make a brand new message.
cheers, John

Charles, like you, am also a fly sailor. Used to bum around in a '61 Piper Colt. Now it's a Maule. Both good airplanes. Both plane and boat go from A to B on the lift-from-airflow-around-a-curved-surface principle, but am still amazed how one of them goes 120 mph, while the other is lucky to reach 5, and above that is just too fast, sort of like yellow or red lining the airspeed in the plane. Good luck with your future M17 adventures, and getting yourself another plane. - Brad

I am looking for some advice for a permanent mounted stern ladder for my 1976 M-17. I want to order one that I know will fit. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I also wonder about her as she is 13 years younger than me as I also wonder how I?ve made it to 80. It?s disheartening when I see people stopping to do things they enjoy because of age as I?ve seen posted here. I?m in the process of building my M-17 for single handing to include raising the mast myself on or off trailer. Installing an autopilot and think I will also do self tailing winches. Already have all lines running to cockpit. I enjoy doing things myself. Have a number of adventures planned with it. How planning to start sailing first of May on Lake Ontario.
Also stilling flying and looking for another plane. Two years ago on take off I lost a wheel on an old piper. One wheel landing didn?t work out so well and flipped it. If you know any pilots they will tell you any landing you walk away from is a good landing, I walked away.
Liked your post as you appear to be like people I?ve enjoyed all my life. Don?t be to serious and enjoy life while getting the most out of it.

?I?m the guy who bought the ex-Gary Hyde M17 from Gail Russell. Currently working on getting it shipped to New Braunfels, TX to sail on Canyon Lake and Lake Travis.

Gary, many of us engage in quid pro quo Honey Do List negotiations with Spouses in order to sail. We Sailors sympathize. Somehow they just don?t understand when we throw ourselves into voyage prep while seeming to lack energy to mow lawn. Take Heart! As they/ we get older they like having us out of their hair. Hey, Gary, enjoy "the ride" (repairs) as much as the destination (launch). You will get to know your craft very well by then. I sailed my first Monty 17 on Lake Travis back in the early 1980's. They are fine boats! Fair winds, Tom Buzzi

(or even before boat projects). Gonna be tough. ? Gary M-17 #637 New Braunfels, TX

Enjoy! She?s a good boat; I enjoyed 10 years of sailing her. She points well. The rope that lifts the center board might need replacing. Check with Bob Egg.

Gary your mail of sailing on Lake Travis reminded me of when in the mid 70s I crewed on a friend?s J 24. I still remember it as beautiful lake. My friend?s dad had money so also sailed regattas out of Houston Yacht Club. Good memories.
Doing up grades on my M17 I bought last year for Lake Ontario. However have 2 ft of snow with zero temps so will be a couple months before I can work on it. It?s in a building but no heat.
Thanks for the memory
Charlie

Charles, like you, am also a fly sailor. Used to bum around in a '61 Piper Colt. Now it's a Maule. Both good airplanes. Both plane and boat go from A to B on the lift-from-airflow-around-a-curved-surface principle, but am still amazed how one of them goes 120 mph, while the other is lucky to reach 5, and above that is just too fast, sort of like yellow or red lining the airspeed in the plane. Good luck with your future M17 adventures, and getting yourself another plane. - Brad

Hey, Gary, enjoy "the ride" (repairs) as much as the destination (launch). You will get to know your craft very well by then. I sailed my first Monty 17 on Lake Travis back in the early 1980's. They are fine boats! Fair winds, Tom Buzzi

I always wanted to own a Maule and went to the factory for a test flight. Flew it with Ray Maule and can say I never did a faster recovery in an accelerated stall than the Maule. Ray even completed me. I think it better than a Super Cub on landing. I didn?t buy because of insurance rates. On a new 180 it was $7000 annually no matter the model.
There is an older one that just came to our grass strip.

Enjoy! She?s a good boat; I enjoyed 10 years of sailing her. She points well. The rope that lifts the center board might need replacing. Check with Bob Egg.

?Hey, Gary, enjoy "the ride" (repairs) as much as the destination (launch). You will get to know your craft very well by then. I sailed my first Monty 17 on Lake Travis back in the early 1980's. They are fine boats! Fair winds, Tom Buzzi

Charlie

I will say - sailing is cheaper than planes. These days it is $200 to get the $100 hamburger. (ha ha)

?Charles, like you, am also a fly sailor. - Brad
