Can you just raise the boom? I kept all my reefing lines running on just the sail and boom. No lines run to the mast or cabin top. This way I can raise the boom completely up and out of the way and then run the awning underneath. The boom isn't used at all for holding up the awning. Just a thought. Lots more fabulous ideas!
My goal was to make this with no...or as few... rigid parts as possible. The idea of stowing the whole thing in a sail bag is what I had in mind.
One thing that was pointed out to me by a buddy from another group; Obviously, you will want to erect a boom tent when the weather is crap. If you have been sailing in rain all day....having a very wet furled main inside your shelter might be something to avoid. I am trying to incorporate that concept as well.

I made a full awning for my NS and will definitely make one for Seafrog, my M-17. It was a very simple design. I used 4 part tent poles that had a shock cord running through to ease putting them together (Walmart) A friend made the awning with Sunbrella. It was 13' X 8'. It had sleeves sewn at each end for the tentpoles to slide into. Tabs were made to tie one end at the mast and the other end at the back stay (right at the split) A loop was
sewn in the middle which was attached by the main halyard. The corners, held athwartship via the tentpoles were then tied down to the rail. I'm thinking of doing the same thing but also put in a zipper around the perimeter with a recess of a couple inches and zip in rip stop sides. But if it isn't raining and all I need is to keep the bugs away, I have a double
cot size mosquito net. Now if I could just figure out a way to hang my hammock in the cockpit... Joe ----- Original Message ----- From: <Flickasf@aol.com> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, November 16, 2008 12:16 PM Subject: M_Boats: boom tent suggestion
I have made boom tents for various of my boats over the years. I have a suggestion:
To get more room under the tent while keeping every thing as simple as possible, have at least one batten pocket sew in athwart with one end left
open. When used as a boom tent, insert the batten, one that is fairly robust, and it will form an arch giving you more room under the tent.
Use a totally enclosed sleeve and then sew it to the inside of the cover. I use Top Gun for the sleeve and for any areas that may chafe. Use Sunbrella for the cover itself.
