Tom, In 2003 I replaced the traveler on my 1977 M17 with a Ronstan ball bearing car. Although Jerry Montgomery advised otherwise, I installed the new track in the same location as the original - in front of the hatchway. I think that location interferes less with passengers than would the mid-cockpit location, especially when sailing downwind. After 8 years I'm still happy with the choice. I race and cruise on an inland lake with minimal waves and rough weather, which may make a difference. Has anyone replaced this travellor with a much longer one that could be placed on the seats and thus span above the floor of the deck? This would provide more adjustment, but would also block part of the hatchway into the cabin. Or maybe I should just replace the traveller in the same location as the original?
