I couldn't agree with you more. I live on a large lake in Texas and have the pleasure of keeping my boats in the water behind the house. I just pulled my pontoon boat out of the water after two and a half years and found only a thin coat of algie which I removed with a pressure washer. I love to sail but, the pontoon barge is great for family outings and motoring alongside the dinghys while teaching the grandkids to sail. Griselda, with her 40" deep fin keel, wil also stay in the water when I launch her again. I am down to only barrier coat and bottom paint to have her ready to go in. I am planning to use a slick, hard, non ablative paint and scrub her botton periodicly with a brush like I do the pontoon. I have a long handle brush with a swivel head for this job. She will also get a pressure wash when I take her out to go to rallys and messabouts. The dinghys live in sling lifts in the boathouse so they are not in the water when not in use. I do feel a bit guilty about the 2 cycle outboard on the pontoon but it is oil injected with a variable ratio between 50:1 and 120:1, depending on operating conditions. My old 10:1 mix British Seagull is now a highly polished decorative piece after seeing the oil slick it laid down. I have been looking at the possibility of using a Thunderstruck electric inboard with "re-gen" (the prop turns the motor which charges the battery when sailing) for Griselda's auxillary in place of the old 4hp Eninrude. We have pretty consistant wind here and I rarely use a motor anyway. Besides, I wouldn't want to poison the Alligators and Snakes that I find sunning themselves on my bulkhead. I chose this retirement location for the clean air and relatively unpolluted water and want to help keep it that way. Whitebeard M17 #14, Griselda Lake Livingston, Texas

Folks, This is for ALL who are contemplating Anti-Fouling Paint Choices (ironic heh?)
THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANY ONE PERSON in particular - hell, I am here to offend all equally. (maybe, LOL)
I need to make a comment, an ass of myself, or have my say. Shoot- I'm going for the TRIFECTA!
Please let us think here for a minute. How many of us like clams, scallops, crabs, oysters, redfish, tuna, bluefish, salmon etc.? I like to eat all of those from time to time. I even like to just look at them in the water! I really would appreciate it, if the freaking bottom paint containing metals and biocide (rhymes with pesticide) was NOT FLAKING off the bottom of a boat to poison the rest of the animals in the sea, so that our boats can have a little less 'fuzz, scum, hair or whatever grows in your neck of the woods' on it's bottom! Please think about it. Hard paints leach the poison out over time, soft ones flake off and frequently have a very short usable life-span, and require another application. You CANNOT scrub ablative paints with much success. Lets try and give the beautiful places we sail a chance to breathe!
Maybe because a lot of life is out of our control this 'week' -economy, political tensions between countries, people losing their jobs and houses. It would be nice - by acting responsibly - to help make the world a better place - if for no one other than yourself - the next time you go sailing! And by doing that , it makes a better place for your neighbor who enjoys the beach, or fishing, or surfing. Happy people make for a good place to live. Happy animals make for a good place to live.
Yeah- I am 57 years old- a hippy - and 'TRY' to live in an eco-friendly manner - I am FAR from being even good at it - but I try. If you have to poison the place that you love to spend your "quality time" - try and have a 'minimal impact'. I hear chili peppers makes a good biocide! Hard paints don't slough off, try paints with lower levels of biocides, check for % of metals, toxins -' yeah Festus - that there Killer X3000 Paint is 40% cyanide - that 'll keep that dern slime off the bottom' . An old girl friend of mine taught me that 'friction is my friend' - works wonders on unwanted aquatic growth too! A little more abrasion and NO ABLATIVES!!! (these are trailerable SMALL boats-it's not like cleaning an aircraft carrier). Please just think about it the next time you choose. Thank You for your time and patience.
Sorry for the rant - but now you know what I am full of. _ _ _ _

Joe....Have you had a sail cover made for Seafrog yet? If you have one I was wondering what measurements you used to have it made. I just wanted to make sure I am getting the right measurements for a good fit...T

I used Micron Extra. I keep Seafrog in saltwater 10 months straight per year. I pull her out after 5 months. Looked great. I agree with Bones. You can recoat with the same bottom paint as long as it is the same product. I like the ablative paint which flakes off during the time the boat is in the water thus shedding the nasties. I don't know if you use ablative paints in fresh water. But there are a gazillion sites out there with great advice. Hi John,
I have Micron CSC on the M17, and Awlgrip All-star on the M23.
Both seem to be fabulous, although far from inexpensive.
Both boats are trailered and sailed in fresh water.
I have been led to believe that unless you remove all the previous bottom paint, recoating should be done with the same product.
For what it is worth.
Later,
Bones
