Hi all, my wife and I had a great sail on Saturday but coming back in toward the marina we grounded the center board (I would have thought the rudder too but no) and in the four foot waves it pounded quite a bit before we motored off of the bar. It was immediately obvious by the time I got to the winch that the center board was not on the winch anymore. So we came back in with the board down but this time in the marina channel from farther out in the bay. The end of the wire halyard was a loop that the D shackle on the center board went through. The loop was swagged at our local West Marine. However examining the end of the halyard it appears the swagging let go as there is nothing but a clean end of wire halyard left. Is there a better approach that might more strength to connect to the 350# chunk of steel in the keel? Also, I found on inspecting the winch drum that the wire halyard had overwrapped and was not allowing the center board down past the region of the stop pin. We had taken the stop pin out but could not expose the shackle on the center board when we were putting in this spring. How can I avoid the halyard overwrapping in the winch (since one cannot see if this is happening in my winch)? I am always glad to have all of your expertise and ideas! Thanks Robbin M-23, M-10
