I checked references before I bought, and had a painless process. I recommend the same for any prospective new buyer.
Steve's pissing contest with Bob should have remained offline between Steve and Bob. Poor taste for Steve to bring it into public (though a comment such as, 'I've been disappointed with Bob E. because...' would seem fine, helpful, and appropriate).
