another location that is close to Olympia is Zittel's at Johnson Point - http://www.zittelsmarina.com/ Ramp is very good. i've had no problem launching a M15 nor M17 at a minus-one-foot tide. during salmon season the ramp can be busy as the tide changes ... all the gals and guys going out, or in, to catch the last wild salmon. going out of Zittel's you have a few more locations you can go 'hunting' for wind: head south-east to Drayton Passage and Nisqually Reach, or north to the east end of Dana Passage & south end of Case Inlet. my experience is that there isn't a lot of wind in Budd Inlet until Fall. Summer winds in South Sound are mostly land breeze ... you need to go looking for topography that 'encourages wind development'. During summer crusing one spends most of their time motoring in all of Puget Sound. my best sailing in South Sound has always been in April and May and then in late September and October. at these times bring warm clothes and raingear! the bonus of this early/late season sailing is you have the water and ramps almost to yourself. -- :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com On Mon, Aug 11, 2014 at 12:11 PM, stevetrapp <stevetrapp@q.com> wrote:
John, Thanx for the information. I would like to join the Montgomery group with my M-15 group in Olympia for a day sail going or coming on Saturday August 30, and/or Saturday September 13. I do know from experience that the boat launch in downtown Olympia at Swantown is much more user friendly at hightide and not very user friendly at low tide. So I will suggest that you try to do your launching and outhauling around the time of high tide, which will be at 9:26 AM on the 30th, then at 9:48 AM on the 13th. Do you have Puget Sound tide tables and charts? Steve M-15 # 335

Hi Steve: Sorry for the delay; setting up the new boat is very busy work but we had our maiden launch and sail yesterday (and the "to do" list is even longer : -). I'm sailing Puget Sound with a group of Monty and Potter guys from the Bay Area. For now, most of us are launching at Olympia on Saturday Aug 30 and making our way to Port Townsend for the boat show the fo;;owing weekend, then returning to Olympia by the weekend of Sat Sept 13. I'm sure the group wouldn't mind meeting you for some "local knowledge". John

Hi All: After Larry Hughston’s kindly-worded post, perhaps it’s time I introduce myself. After buying an M12 and converting it to a tanbark gaff sloop (“Mojo”; Havasu vet ’12 & ’13) and buying a Gunter-rigged 1969 Potter 14 ("Hobbes"; Mexico vet with Paul Bear and his M17 Pequeña, Florida vet with Dan Phy and his restored 12’ Pelican, and the recent Cruiser Challenge, dead last but rescuing the capsized P15) I decided to buy Larry’s M15 “Old 189”. I’ve renamed her “At Last” (the Etta James song) for my wonderful girlfriend. My first outing later this month will be Puget Sound with Dan Phy and The Usual Suspects with many more to come. Lastly, a warm thanks to Monty sailing friends, old and new! Fair winds to all, John Chille M12 Mojo P14 Hobbes M15 At Last Ventura, CA PS: A friend spotted an M15 here at the launch ramp on Tuesday. If you know them I’d like to meet them.
