I calculated that with my 4 hp 4-stroke outboard on my M17 I get the following: Approx. 30 nm/gal at 4 kt burning at ~2.2 hours/L 20 nm/gal at 4.5 kt 1.2 " 15 nm/gal at 5 kt 0.8 " So speed is important, but even at 5 knots you can go 45 nautical miles on 3 gallons of fuel. Bigger boats not so much. ~~~_/)~~~Gary Hyde 2005 M17 #637 sailboat 'Hydeaway 2' On May 8, 2011, at 9:02 PM, George Johnson wrote:
I have a Honda 5hp 4stroke on my M17 and have been wondering what its gallon per hour burn rate is... For lake sailing I fire up the engine just to get away and to the launch ramp, otherwise, I rarely motor. I'm headed out this week to do some coastal sailing where I'll probably use the engine a lot more. Have any of you all checked out how much your engines burn at different speeds and covering quite a distance? Thanks in advance for any info.
