Rich, In running your outhaul to to the mast on the boom, I noticed that you attached the outhaul line to a block halfway down the boom and used another line to adjust the outhaul. Why? For the purchase or are there other reasons that you've found through actual use? I've got a new-to-me refurbished loosefooted main and a new-to-me Monty OEM boom that I'm outfitting and hope to get out sailing this summer! (Both the sail and boom were collected on this very site! Thanks!) My old sail was not loose footed, so I hadn't fully considered the sail adjustments possible with a good outhaul (though I've seen your picture before and saved it for reference!). Now I'm getting excited about another sheet in the cockpit... On Sun, Jun 15, 2014 at 12:18 PM, Rich Makela <richmak@makelaperformance.com

Daniel,
I echo Tom's endorsement of a loose-footed main. I ordered a new main for my M-17 in 2010 from Elliot/Pattison Sails. I failed to realize that I was ordering a loose-footed main until it arrived. Having sailed a Laser for several years, I decided it was OK. I reconfigured the outhaul (see attachment) to make it easy to adjust under way. I really like the ability to adjust the draft. It was a happy accident.

Daniel, As long as you are considering new sails, look into having the main made as a loose footed one. The tack and clew will have to be reinforced more than the usual and you will need to install a bit better mechanical advantage on the outhaul fittings as you will be using it to trim the draft on the main but the boost in performance is said to be considerable. I am looking at new sails for the M17 I have and am seriously considering going the loose footed route. Please reply to this email as I have concerns that my missives to this website are not getting through to anybody. Thanks, Tom B, M17, 1978

Yup. You need new sails. And sails for the M15 are quite reasonably priced. I got mine from JudyB at Hyde. She did a fantastic job. Measurements are key, as all these older M boats can have some slight differences. New sails change the boat so much you won't believe it.
Which reminds me, Judy, I owe you some money and some sails!

Hi I know this question has been asked before But can't recall the advise that was given. So here it is: I have a 1985 M15 for about 3 years and I just started noticing that the main hangs down about 4 inches at the back. Is this normal or are my 29 year old sails done for and I need new sails? Also where can I find out the sail dimensions for my 1985 M15 is there a web page somewhere ?? Thanks Klaas
