I have similar feedback to Larry.. I use a CDI FF2 and it's been a really solid performer... I did add a toggle to the forestay as recommended by CDI.... Like Larry I also use an extension (in my case a 24x2 inch wide piece of plywood) stuck into the base of the mast to support the furling assembly when trailering. I also echo Dave's recommendation of getting both the sail & furler from JudyB - at http://www.hydesailsdirect.com/ I was very happy with my sails and she clearly knows our monty's... Keith *Keith R. I've had a CDI FF2 on CornDog for about 15 years now without a single problem. The unit is simple and bulletproof. I had a 150 genoa made for it by Yager Sails, in fact I'm on my second one now, and both have been excellent. The M17 loves it's 150. Really seems to come alive when the winds allow it to be used, which is most of the time here in the northwest. I did replace the forestay when I installed the unit, but just because it was original to my 1976 boat.
I don't think the furler has added much time to my launching. I guess it just depends on how you do it. I leave my sail furled on the CDI all the time. For trailering I have a special travel sleeve that slides over the furled sail to keep it clean and safe, and then everything straps to the mast. It will stick out beyond the foot of the mast about a foot and a half, so a piece of 2"pvc slid into the end of the mast makes a nice extension to support it on long road trips.
I am not familiar with the newer Snapfurl's. They may be great, too, if they can be left on the forestay when traveling. If your boat lives in a slip, that wouldn't matter.

i recommend the Schaefer Snapfurl.
i recommend having a new headsail made. get a 150% ... this is the sail that Lyle designed the M17 to use. recutting a sail will only result in disappointing performance.
i recommend getting both the sail & furler from JudyB - http://www.hydesailsdirect.com/ Judy knows the boats, can get you the correct items and will treat you right.
order soonest as this is the time of years backorders happen as folks get ready for the sailing season!
be aware that a furling unit will increase rigging time by 15-20 minutes if you 'dry sail' the boat.

Sailors, Asking for input from those that have installed roller furlers on their Monty 17's. What brand do you have and what did it cost? Did you have to change out your forestay to install the unit? Do you like what you have? Did you have to have a special jib made for the furler? Thanks for your help.
